Abstract

Chronic inflammation has emerged as one of the principal biological mechanisms underlying the global burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, obesity, osteoarthritis, metabolic syndrome, neurodegenerative disorders, and several forms of cancer. Unlike acute inflammation, which is essential for host defense and tissue repair, chronic low-grade inflammation is characterized by persistent activation of immune pathways, excessive production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, and prolonged oxidative stress that gradually impair tissue function. Increasing evidence suggests that elevated circulating biomarkers such as C-reactive protein (CRP), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) are strongly associated with disease progression, reduced quality of life, and increased mortality among adult populations. Consequently, identifying safe and effective anti-inflammatory interventions has become an important priority in preventive medicine and clinical nutrition.
