A Motivation as Correlate of Job Performance Among Lecturers’ in Public Tertiary Institutions in Gombe State

Abstract

This study examined motivation as a correlate of job performance among lecturers in public tertiary institutions Gombe state. Four (4) hypotheses guided the study. Correlational design was used in the study with a total population of 2,561 lecturers. A sample of 366 lecturers was drawn through proportionate sampling procedure. Data was collected using three (2) sets of adapted questionnaires from Namutebi (2019) to measure lecturers job performance and teacher motivation scale from Gocke (2010) Cronbach Alpha was used to determine reliability of internal consistency with α =0.882 and 0.886 coefficients respectively. The validity of the instrument was ascertained using content validity report from 3 experts. The questionnaires’ were administered and retrieved using drop and pick method. The data was analysed using inferential statistics. PPMC was used to determine relationship, independent sample t-test was used to determine differences among gender and one-way ANOVA was used to determine difference between groups. The findings revealed significant relationship between motivation and job performance. In addition, the study found motivation a significant contributor of job performance among lecturers, however, there was no significant difference based on gender in job performance among lecturers in public tertiary institutions in Gombe state. Therefore, the study concludes that job performance among lecturers in public tertiary institutions in Gombe state is largely dependent on their motivation. The study recommends that, lecturers should increase their level of intrinsic motivation through developing passion for their job and adopt mentor-mentee relationship to enable them learn from more experience staff.
